In cooperation with Timm Ulrichs, Hessam Samavatian has visualised the symbolism of the signature, its significance for the status of an art object and for forgeries: the two artists each practised and forged the other’s signature, and in a second step confirmed the authenticity of the forged signature with their own signature. In addition, in the customary art mode the signatures are labelled with the date and the edition number 1/1. Martin Heidegger’s commentary on the relationship between artist and artwork can be associated with several of Samavatian’s works: “. . . it is the work that first lets the artist emerge as a master of his art. The artist is the origin of the work. The work is the origin of the artist. Neither is without the other.”
